What Would the Future of the Internet Look Like?

There are only 168 hours in a week, and we now spend about 24 of them on the internet. This means that during the next 10 years, you’ll spend nearly a year and a half on the web.

With the internet playing such a huge role in our everyday lives, it’s easy to notice how much it’s changed over the years.

For example, the average internet speed in the US increased drastically, and social media helps us stay connected. But criminals have also found new methods to exploit innocent people on the web.

So what is the future of the internet, and where do we go from here? Read on to find out what massive changes could lie ahead.

Unbelievably Fast Internet Speeds

Imagine being able to download an entire HD movie instantly. This may sound like a ridiculous idea, but it looks like the direction we’re headed.

Of course, speeds like this are still far off in the distance, possibly even half a century away. But in the meantime, average internet speeds will continue to climb, as more and more people get access to gigabit internet.

With the promising future of internet speed, the average household won’t have to worry about sharing a connection anymore. There will be plenty of bandwidth to go around.

Worldwide Internet Access

As Americans, we take certain things for granted, including the fact that almost all of us have internet access. We have it so good that we can play around with drone technology in our free time.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case everywhere in the world.

But what if we could put lasers on solar-powered drones and fly them all over the globe to give internet access to people who otherwise wouldn’t have it? Does it seem too far-fetched?

Well, that’s exactly what Facebook is trying to accomplish.

Best of all, they’re not alone. Other tech giants are doing their best to make this idea a reality, too. Google’s Project Loon uses high-tech weather balloons to do it, while SpaceX plans to use satellites.

Growing Privacy and Security Concerns

Not everything is sunshine and rainbows in Internet Land. Believe it or not, today’s cybercriminals access over 1 billion accounts per year.

It seems like not even our health is safe from cybercriminals. In the near future, we may begin to see criminals hacking implanted medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. Not to mention, computer viruses can also cause issues for people who rely on these devices to live.

Also, smart home devices like Amazon Echo are one of the hottest products on the market. In just three more years, smart homes will comprise over half of all households in the US. But this opens up the possibility of hackers unlocking your door, or spying on you through the camera on your TV.

Final Thoughts on the Future of the Internet

When you think about what the future of the internet holds, it’s hard not to get excited. But along with all that excitement come some frightening possibilities as well.

There are too many positive changes to discuss in one article. This includes the endless applications of blockchain technology. And while it’s fun to ask, “What will the world be like in 10 years?”, only time will tell how these predictions pan out.
